The United Nations Refugee Agency on Wednesday raised the alarm over the growing number of Internally Displaced Persons in the North-East, saying the population would strain resources, unless something urgent was done.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, who stated this in a statement, said he was worried over the large numbers of Nigerian refugees fleeing Cameroon into the North-East.
Grandi noted that 889 IDPs, mostly children, were received in Banki town, Borno State, on Saturday from Cameroon, in the latest arrival as the number continued to strain the humanitarian resources.
The UN Commissioner said the UNHCR would meet with the governments of Nigeria and Cameroon to outline ways of addressing these “spontaneous movements.”
