The Controller, Oyo/Osun Area Command, Nigeria Customs Service, Udo-Aka Emmanuel, has said that 15 vehicles were impounded from smugglers in Saki, Oyo State, with duty payable on the vehicles worth N23.3m.
Emmanuel explained that the smugglers took to their heels when the men of the command confronted them, leaving the vehicles behind. He explained that the vehicles were used to conceal contraband goods like imported rice and second-hand clothing.
Apart from the seizure, a truck with number plate LSD 445 XU was also impounded with 172 pieces of used tyres and 272 units of vehicle wheels on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway after it was illegally brought into the country. The duty paid value on the items, including the truck, was over N5.5m. The controller expressed sadness that some elders were pleading for the release of the vehicles and the goods seized.
